The Tunnel Back is a warm and moving account of the struggles of opiate addicts to treat each other for their addiction. In the Synanon Houses addicts live together, withdraw themselves from drugs, work, and give each other "therapy" in the form of "synanons," or : Harris Isbell.

Synanon is a lay organization founded on these principles. This book, an interesting, well-written if unashamedly partisan piece of sociological reportage, tells the story of Synanon and its creator, Chuck Dederich, a cured alcoholic and a dynamic, practical extrovert with a strong sense of mission.
